Summer is hot & humid, and according to the calendar – almost over. Temperatures will however keep us in summer mood for yet another month or two.

Treasures for All the Senses

Every year, they organise a matsuri(festival) dedicated to Chrysanthemums, a.k.a, Kiku, in our neighborhood. In addition to watching and buying the beautiful multicolored flowers, we can also enjoy an array of music and dance performances, enjoy some Oden (simmered winter dish) or sip some beer, chu-hai (shōchū based drink, somewhat similar to cider), or special Chrysanthemum sake. The festival is mainly arranged in the courtyard of the Daienji-temple in Yanaka, but spreads out to the neighborhood as well.

We woke up really late today (as so often in weekends), but went out to enjoy the last hours of the matsuri – for today that is, as the matsuri continues tomorrow. We enjoyed a cup of the Kiku sake, whilst listening to some music performances at the temple garden. The sake is so nice, as it’s not only pleasure for the tastebuds, but also pleasure for the eyes; bright yellow Chrysanthemum petals in the clear sake, served from a cup carved from a piece of bamboo. Mmm.

Later we also had a stroll to our neighborhood to buy some of our favourite myoga sushi to eat as a snack. Opposite to this lovely, small sushi place (run by a group of grandmas and grandpas) is a new fascinating shop called Ethnorth Gallery, which is selling household items, accessories and clothing made by various Asian ethnic groups. I love everything they have in the shop, and if I just had the money, I would buy them all.. this time I got just two ornamental hooks which I already made into earrings, and some Nepalese hemp yarn, to which I have a particular purpose in my mind.. the results I’ll share later next week, perhaps 😉

On the way back home I noticed a rather new second hand kimono shop, where I made some incredible discoveries; a beautiful silk Haori coat in pristine condition, which will most likely have it’s public debut with me next week during the Tokyo Fashion Week, and two Kasuri kimono, which materials are now officially part of my upcoming thesis capsule collection. The colors are perfect, and the sensation of having goosepumps rising all over my skin when I saw them, just told me I need to get them. Kasuri is extremely expensive as it is painstakingly slow to make, therefore I was suprised how cheap I got these, even though they are second hand.. On the other hand I’m of course happy to get them without streching the pennies too much, but on the other hand I feel sorry for the people who originally made these and kind of quilty for not paying ‘enough’ for such treasures!

As if these treasures were not enough, I found a lovely thing waiting for me inside our post box. Our friends had sent me a Yayoi Kusama tenugui (Japanese cotton hand towel/handkerchief), as a thank you for sending them particular stamps earlier. I’m in love with this tenugui, the colors, the pattern.. goes especially well with mustard yellow skinny jeans I painted in Jackson Pollock style some time ago. 🙂

To crown our evening, Taiko-drum group Gocoo was giving a street performance just around the corner from our flat! We have seen them performing a few times earlier, and they are always super energetic and so skillful. I just love the Taiko drums – their sound really goes to the core. 

Even Monkeys Fall from Trees

Yes, it’s been a long, long time since I last posted – my apologies. The summer swept me away, and while I haven’t been working, I have been enjoying (read: sweltering in) the summer sun and gazing at all things wonderful.

Recently I made two excursions for my thesis purposes, to Fukuoka and Kagoshima in the wonderful island of Kyushu, in southern Japan. Here is a first set of images to pass you the spirit of my adventure in Fukuoka; in the amazing Yame village, in the charming hideout which is the Foucault boutique, and in the truly impressive, ancient Dazaifu Tenman-gū shrine.

盆踊り Bon Odori

Liekö kuumuus vaikuttanut laiskistumiseen, kun en ole viime aikoina jaksanut keskittyä kuvien latailuun.

Olen tällä viikolla saanut seikkailla Tokiossa täysin oman tahtoni mukaan. Koi on Englannissa ja yliopisto on O-Bon juhlan vuoksi suljettuna. Kuumuuden vuoksi en myöskään jaksanut lähteä nostalgia-reissulle Kiotoon ja appivanhempien luo Gifuun, vaan päätin keksiä tekemistä itselleni Tokion lähiympäristössä.

Tänään olin vapaa, virran vietävissä, ainoana täysin varmana kohteenani näyttely Naoki Takizawan suunnittelemista vaatteista. ‘Anthropometria’-nimisen kokoelman vaatteet pohjautuvat vanhoihin saksalaisiin matemaattisiin malleihin. Koko näyttely oli muutenkin huikaisevan kiehtova – esillä oli kaikenlaista antiikkista omituisten eläinten luurangoista täytettyihin eksoottisiin lintuihin, vanhoihin (lääke)tieteellisiin välineisiin, Meiji-aikakauden valokuviin, korurasioihin ja suuriin mustavalko-vedoksiin vanhasta rakennustyömaasta. Museo, Intermediatheque,  löytyy täältä. Naoki Takizawan vaatteet ovat näillä näkymin esillä lokakuuhun asti.

Näyttelyn lisäksi kävin kävelyllä keisarillisen palatsiin tuntumassa,sekä toteamassa Tokyo Towerin juurella että näkymä juurelta riittää tällä kertaa; tuntui hölmöltä jonottaa sinne yksinään pariskuntien seassa, lisäksi korkeampi näköalatasanne -se minne olisin nimenomaan halunnut- oli suljettuna. Kävelymatkalla metrolle päin korviini kantautui taiko-rumpujen huumaava sointi ja uteliaisuuteni heräsi. Seurasin ääntä ja löysin tieni keskelle taianomaista Bon Odori- tanssia, pikkuruisen temppelin pihamaalle. Kesäkimonoihin (Yukata&Jinbei) pukeutuneiden tanssijoiden lisäksi myös jokunen salariman ja turisti oli rohkaistunut mukaan tanssiin. Pimeässä loistavat paperilyhdyt, taikorummutus, huilujen liverrys ja perinteinen laulu yhdessä olivat jotain maagista. Jälleen kerran matka ajassa taaksepäin, keskellä kiireisintä Tokiota. Laiska linkkaa, eli O-Bon juhlasta voi lukaista lisää vaikkapa täältä.

It might be the sticky, hot weather that’s making me less enthusiasted about spending my time uploading images on the laptop.

Due to my hubby being in UK for the past couple of weeks & the uni being closed due to O-Bon season, I’ve recently had lots of free time just for me, myself and I. Originally I was planning a trip to Kyoto & to see my parents-in-law in Gifu, but decided to postpone that due to the immense heat (if already Tokyo is boiling hot, Kyoto is worse!).

Today it was time for ‘Anthropometria’ exhibition of Naoki Takizawa’s clothing based on old German mathematical plaster models. I was shivering out of excitement over the rest of the exhibition as well – all kinds of antique obscurities; skeletons of strange animals big&small, stuffed tropical birds, medical tools, scientific tools, old photographs,jewellery boxes, large scale photographs of a construction site..all displayed in and on antique furniture and lab equipment. More about the venue, Intermediatheque, and the exhibitions there can be found here. I was told Anthropometria exhibition is on until October 2013.

I also had a stroll around the Imperial Palace and gazed at the Tokyo Tower (didn’t feel like entering and queueing amongst romantic couples by myself). On my route to the subway station the magical drumming of Taiko drums caught my attention. As I followed the music, I found my way to a small temple courtyard,where Bon Odori dance was taking place. The glowing paper lanterns, the taiko drums, the flutes, the singing, the yukata-clad people dancing was again something magical. Yet another trip back in time right in the middle of modern, bustling Tokyo.

蒸し暑い Mushiatsui!

蒸し暑い -Mushiatsui; painostavan kostean kuuma! Sadekausi on Tokiossa virallisesti ohi (vaikka se lyhyeksi jäikin) ja kesän kuumuus tekee tuloaan. Viime päivinä lämpötila on kivunnut varjossa +33c saakka ja kosteusprosentti seilaa 60%-73% välillä. Aurinko ja lämpö ovat sinällään tervetulleita, mutta jos niistä ei pääse nauttimaan paikkaan missä tuulenvire tai veden läheisyys virkistää, on olo lähinnä kuin olisi saunassa vaatteet päällä. Tämä pätee esim. junien odotteluun asemalaiturilla. Lähes jokainen japanilainenkin löyhyttelee tuskaisena paitaansa tai heiluttelee viuhkaa kasvojen edessä.

Kuumankostea ilma teki myös odottamattomat tepposet keskeneräiselle työlleni Tamabissa. Minulla on kesken suurikokoinen kangas, mille olen ensin jäljentänyt aobana-kynällä suunnittelemani kuvion ja sen jälkeen alkanut piirtää kuviota kankaalle vahalla, myöhempää värjäystä varten. Olin tänään aikeissa vihdoin jatkaa vahakuvion tekemistä. Aobana on kuitenkin eräänlaista mustetta, mikä haihtuu vedessä jäljettömiin, joten painosalissa odottikin puoliksi tyhjä kangas! Piirtämäni kuviot olivat hävinneet pelkän ilmankosteuden ansiosta täysin, jäljellä olivat vain vahakuviot jotka olin jo ehtinyt jäljentää kankaalle. Eli.. ..uudestaan! :]

蒸し暑い -Mushiatsui; muggy, hot weather! The rainy season is officially over in Tokyo and the summer is really heating up. During the last few days the temperature has climbed up to +33c and the air moisture content is between 60-73%. I adore sun and heat, but it can get pretty agonizing if you can’t enjoy it in a place with some kind of breeze or in the proximity of water (i.e. sea, lake, river, fountain,pond,…).

The humid air is evident in another way as well. I have been making a rather large wax-dye fabric, on which I have first drawn a pattern with ‘aobana’ (on the whole fabric) and then started to trace the same pattern with wax. Now,’aobana’ is a kind of water soluble ink that’s used to draw designs on fabric before wax work&dyeing. …And, yes. I discovered today that the pattern I had drawn on the fabric before had completely disappeared. Only the wax bits I had already traced remain. Auch. :]

Noirs & Flowers

Sain kokea pari mukavaa lisäyllätystä, kun päätin käydä katsomassa Odilon Redonin näyttelyn Sompo Japan taidemuseossa. Museo sijaitsee nimittäin 42.kerroksessa, joten yläilmoista oli huikeat näkymät Tokion ylitse. Näkymä oli hiukan toinen, kuin mitä olen nähnyt ennen. Toinen lisäylläri oli itse näyttelyssä: tutkittuani pitkään ja hartaasti Odilon Redonin Noirs-työt läpi, olin jo aikeissa lähteä museokaupan kautta kotiin. Viimeisen kulman takaa löytyi vielä kuitenkin sykähdyttävä ja kuuluisa taidemaailman helmi: Vincent van Goghin ‘viisitoista auringonkukkaa’. Upeaa nähdä työ läheltä ja huomata miten kolmiulotteinen se onkaan. Vincent ei maalissa säästellyt!

When I decided to go and see the Odilon Redon exhibition at Sompo Japan Art Museum, I got a couple of nice little surprises into the bargain. The museum is located at the 42nd floor, so I got to see a fantastic view over Tokyo, from a different angle than what I’ve seen before. Another surprise was waiting for me at the exhibition: after carefully checking through the Noirs by Odilon Redon, I was about to leave home after visiting the museum shop. Behind the last corner, a gem of the art world was greeting me: ‘Sunflowers’ by Vincent van Gogh. . Great to see this work up close and notice how three-dimensional it really is. Vincent really didn’t spear with the paint!

お久しぶり – Ohisashiburi, eli long time no see! Kaikenlainen sekalainen puuha on pitänyt minut kiireisenä tai/ja väsyneenä muutaman viikon, enkä ole malttanut istua läppärin ja piuhojen äärelle. Mutta otetaan vahinko takaisin pienissä erissä!

Tässä joitakin kuvia Kichijojin alueesta, jonne reissaa junalla Shibuyasta parikymmentä minuuttia. Sinne vaellan, kun haluan tehdä ihania lankalöytöjä Avril-lankakaupasta, metsästää kimono-aarteita Omoshiro-yasta, tai vaellella muuten vain idyllisillä pikkukujilla ja tutkailla mm. vintagekauppojen valikoimia. Alueella on myös pieniä ompelutarvikekauppoja, sekä korutarvikekauppa Cottonfield.

Viimeksi suuntasin Kichijojiin tarkoituksenani löytää lankoja taiteellista paperivaateprojektia varten. Avril ei pettänyt luottamustani tälläkään kertaa, sillä mukaan tarttui suorastaan herkullista bambupaperilankaa, puuvilla-paperilankaa, sekä lisähöysteenä tulevaisuuden varalle kahta erilaista silkki-teräslankaa. Löydöt taisivat olla hyödyksi, sillä professorini pyysi vielä keskeneräistä työtäni esille Taman taideyliopiston Open Campus-päiville! Nyt täytyy vain ahkeroida se valmiiksi ja näyttelykuntoon, näyttely on tiedossa parin viikon päästä.

おひさしぶり- Ohisashiburi, long time no see! A few weeks have passed since I last made a post. I’ve been busy doing all sorts of things, and haven’t had the patience or the energy to concentrate on typing and uploading images. Apologies for this, I’ll try to fix the situation in small batches 🙂

To start with, here are some pictures from Kichijoji area, a 20 minute train ride from Shibuya. I travel there when I want to find fantastic specialty yarns from Avril yarn shop, hunt after Kimono treasures from Omoshiro-ya, or just wander along the idyllic little streets and check the many charming little shops around there. There are also many little haberdashery shops in the area, including jewelry supply shop Cottonfield.

Recently I headed to Kichijoji with the intention of finding some yarns for an artistic paper fashion project. Avril didn’t let me down, as I found some fabulous bamboo paper yarn, cotton-paper yarn, as well as some silk-steel yarns for future projects. The yarns seemed to be a great finding, as my professor already asked if my work (in-progress) could be displayed at an exhibition at Tama Art University Open Campus. Now I just need to finish the pieces in time – 2 more weeks to go!

Sunday Walk

Viime sunnuntaina lähdimme Koin kanssa Omote-Sandolle kauluspaidan metsästykseen – ystävän häät ovat parin viikon päästä. Samalla sain lievitettyä toistakin ‘maku-ikävääni’, sillä tanskalaiskahvilasta löytyi ruissekavoileipä, minkä sisällä oli tuoretta savulohta.  Kauniita sinisiä, violetteja ja pinkkejä Hortensioita on nyt siellä täällä.

Last Sunday me & Koi headed to Omote-Sando to hunt for the perfect shirt – our friend’s wedding is in a couple of weeks. I was super happy to find smoked salmon sandwich from a Danish cafe!

Black & White

Japanissa on mahdonta löytää lakua mistään kaupasta. Lakuikävän yltyessä yhä suuremmaksi, yllätti Koichi mieluisasti ja tilasi netin kautta muutaman pussin mustaa kultaa vierotusoireitani helpottamaan. Siitäkin huolimatta, ettei voi itse sietää lakritsin tuoksua tai makua! Paketti saapui tänään. Illalla kävimme lähikorttelissa Kumamoton alueen ruokia tarjoilevassa Izakayassa (lähin selvennys tälle on kenties ‘ruokabaari’?). Menussa seikkaileva karhukaveri on nimeltään Kumamon.

It’s practically impossible to find liquorice, my favourite treat, in any shops in Japan. But,my darling saved the day- he ordered some of the black gold for me  from the Internet,despite he absolutely hates the smell&taste of it.The package arrived today.  In the evening we had dinner at a local Izakaya serving Kumamoto themed dishes. The cute mascot is called Kumamon.

The Yurikamome or There and Back Again

Eilen kävin ihmettelemässä uusimpia sisustustuotteiden tuulia & materiaaleja Tokyo Big Sightissa, Interior Lifestyle messuilla (http://www.interior-lifestyle.com/en/top.php). Menomatka sujui suosikkivempeleelläni Yurikamomella, samoin kuin illalla paluumatka, jolloin sain myös matkaseuraa siipastani. Yurikamome on automatisoitu monorail, minkä kyydistä on huikeat näkymät Tokion pilvenpiirtäjiin ja Rainbow Bridgelle. Vähän kuin huvipuistoajelu, mutta jonka kyydissä voi jopa myös edetä matkanteossa. Olisivatpa kaikki julkiset kulkuvälineet yhtä hauskoja.

Yesterday I went to the Tokyo Big Sight to check what’s going on at the interior front, at the Interior Lifestyle fair (http://www.interior-lifestyle.com/en/top.php). The journey there and back I took on my favourite mode of transport: The Yurikamome monorail.
